Air fryer vs. oven
The air fryer takes the crown when it comes to making these avocado fries for several reasons!
You see, it cooks by circulating hot air around the food, giving it that perfect crispy outer layer that we all love. It’s almost like deep frying but without all that excessive oil. Plus, with the air fryer, you don’t have to preheat your oven, which can save you time and energy.
However, if you don’t have an air fryer or prefer using the oven, don’t worry!
You can still achieve deliciously crispy avocado fries by following the same recipe. And, I’ll share the instructions on how to make these delicious avocado fries in the oven down below!
Ingredients needed
Here’s everything you need to make this breaded avocado fries…
- Avocados
- Panko breadcrumbs
- Flour
- Eggs
- Spices (chili powder, hot paprika, garlic powder, salt)
Tip:
Make sure to use ripe but firm avocados for the avocado fries!

Before you do anything, take some time to prepare your avocados! You want to make sure you get evenly sliced avocado wedges for “frying.”
To do this:
- Slice down the middle around the seed and twist to open.
- Carefully remove the seed with a knife and peel the skin.
- To keep the form, I carefully slide my thumb between the avocado and the skin to gently peel it away.
- Then, you can easily slice the avocado without mashing it.
What’s the best kind of avocado to use for avocado fries?
The best type of avocado to use is a Hass avocado. They have a creamy texture and hold up well in the air fryer. They should be ripe but still firm to the touch. That means they should give slightly when you press on them but not feel mushy.
Step 2: Set up breading station
Once you have your avocado slices, set up a breading station with three shallow bowls. This will make it so much easier to coat the avocado slices evenly.
- First, grab a small dish and add the flour, chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, and kosher salt. Give it a good stir to mix everything together.
- Then, take another small dish and beat the egg until it becomes frothy.
- Lastly, you’ll need another dish to hold the panko breadcrumbs.
Why should I use panko breadcrumbs?
Panko breadcrumbs are light and airy, which makes them perfect for creating a crispy coating on the avocado fries. They also have a slightly larger size than regular bread crumbs, giving more texture to the final product.
Can I make this avocado fry recipe gluten-free?
Yes, you can! Simply swap out regular flour for a 1:1 gluten-free flour and use gluten-free panko breadcrumbs instead.
Step 3: Coat the avocado slices
Follow these simple steps to get perfectly coated avocado fries.
- First, roll the avocado slice in the flour (give it a light tap to remove excess flour).
- Then, dip it in the egg wash and coat it with panko bread crumbs.
- Repeat this process with all the avocado slices!
Tip:
Gently press the panko into the avocado to make sure it’s evenly coated.
Why are my breadcrumbs not sticking to the avocado?
If the panko breadcrumbs are not sticking to the avocado, try lightly spraying the slices with some cooking oil spray. This will help the breadcrumbs stick better.
Step 4: Air fry avocado slices
Now it’s time to cook those perfectly coated avocado fries in the air fryer!
- First, lightly grease the air fryer basket with avocado spray.
- Then, place the avocado fries in a single layer in the basket.
- Gently spray them with the avocado oil spray.
- Air fry them at 390°F for 7 minutes, flipping them halfway through.
- Once the avocado fries are crispy and golden, carefully remove them from the air fryer basket and allow them to cool for a few minutes.
Tip:
Make sure not to overcrowd the air fryer basket; otherwise, the avocado slices may not cook evenly. You may need to cook them in batches.
How do I bake these avocado fries in the oven?
First, preheat the oven to 425°F. Then, grease a baking sheet and place the panko-breaded avocado fries on it. Give the top a little spritz of avocado spray.
Bake the avocado fries for about 15 minutes, flipping them halfway through until they turn golden and crispy.
It’s that easy!
How to serve air fried avocado fries
Once the fries have cooled down, you can serve them with your favorite dipping sauce!
My favorite is a spicy mayo dip, made by mixing mayonnaise with hot sauce and a squeeze of lime juice. A creamy ranch or chipotle aioli sauce would also pair well with these avocado fries.
You can also keep it really simple with some good ol’ hot sauce!
For a full meal, serve the avocado fries alongside a juicy smash burger or some chicken tinga tacos for a delicious dinner.
How to store leftovers
If you happen to have any leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. To reheat, simply pop them back into the air fryer for a few minutes until crispy again.
I hope you enjoy these delicious crunchy avocado fries!

Instructions
- In a small dish add the flour, chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, and kosher salt. Stir to combine. In another small dish add the egg and beat until frothy. In another dish add the panko breadcrumbs.
- In an assembly line manner, roll the first avocado slice in the flour (give it a light tap to remove excess flour), then submerge it in the egg wash, followed by the panko bread crumbs. I gently push the panko into the avocado to ensure its evenly coated. Repeat with all of the avocado slices.
- Lightly grease the air fryer basket with avocado spray, then place the avocado fries with some space in between, then lightly spray the fries with some avocado oil. Air fry on 390F for 7 minutes, flipping halfway through, or until desired crispiness. Depending on the size of your air fryer basket, will depend on how many batches you have to do. [See note # 3 for oven instructions].
Notes
- Slicing avocado: Cut avocado in half and carefully remove the seed. Then gently insert your thumb in between the skin and flesh to peel the skin off. Place avocado flat side down and cut the avocado into slices.
- Favorite types of dipping sauce for this recipe: buffalo ranch, plain ranch, chipotle aioli, or hot sauce.
- Air fryer: Allow air fryer to preheat to 390F, most air fryers do this before you put the food in. If you must do it manually, allow the air fryer to preheat for 4 minutes. Different air fryers can yield different results when it comes to cook time and crispiness of the fries, panko should be golden brown and crisp. May need additional minutes depending on air fryer.
- Oven instructions: Preheat the oven to 425F. Grease baking sheet, place panko breaded avocado fries on baking sheet, spray the top with a little avocado spray. Bake the avocado fries for 15 minutes, flipping halfway through, or until they are golden and crispy.
My girlfriend surprised me with these as a snack the other day and they are so good. Healthy and satisfying.
Is there anyway to store these and reheat them? I want to try making them for my toddler but he only eats a little at a time.
Hi Carrie, you could keep in an airtight container for 1 to 2 days in the refrigerator, but since it’s avocado it will brown. To reheat you can airfry at 350F for 4-5 min until warmed through.
Can this be done with Italian breadcrumbs?
Yes you can substitute Italian breadcrumbs, but you won’t get the same light crunchy bite as the panko breadcrumbs
Is there a substitute you think would work for the eggs? We have an allergy in the family
Hi Rachel, you can try using milk.
ranch!!! It get so crispy and tastes delicious
Made this last night and turned out amazing! I have been craving fried avocado since having it at a restaurant last summer. I knew I would have to try it since getting an air fryer for Christmas. This recipe did not disappoint!
I’m so glad you loved the recipe Jenny! Thanks for making it!
This was so delicious!! Just got my air fryer and wanted to try making our whole dinner using it. Perfect kept friendly (ish) side to our burger! I saw a recipe using parm instead of Panko. Do you think that would still work or will it just melt off?
Hi Chauncey! Congrats on your new air fryer, you’re gonna love it! I haven’t tried it with just parm… so unfortunately I can’t speak to how it will work out. It will probably just melt if you are using it alone.
